Here are some frequently asked questions about our solar sign lights:

How do solar sign lights work?

Solar-powered sign lights consist of four major components: the light, the solar panel, the battery and the light sensor. During the day, the solar panel takes energy from the sun and converts it into electricity that is used to charge the battery. The light sensor detects when night falls and turns on the light, powered by the battery.  In the morning, the light sensor switches the light off and the solar charging cycle starts again.

How far away from my sign should I place my sign light?

To optimally light an 8' x 10' sign, the light fixture should be placed approximately 6 to 8 feet in front of the sign. For smaller signs, you can place the light closer.  If you are mounting the light substantially above or below the sign (either on a ground mounting or on from a post above), the light should be positioned closer to the sign.

How do I mount the solar panel?

You have many options for mounting the solar panel. We sell a mounting bracket that can be used to attach it to the side of a sign post or nearby pole.  You can also flush-mount it on a nearby roof or on top of the sign. It is important that the solar panel be located in a place with unobstructed sun exposure during the day for optimal charging.  For customers in the northern hemisphere, it should also be mounted at an angle slightly to the south. To be specific, the angle of the panel should be approximately your lattitude plus 15 degrees in the summer and your lattitude minus 15 degress in the winter.

Can I use my sign light as a floodlight?

Yes. When placed a greater distance away, for example on a roof or pole, the GenLight sign light can act as a solar flood light providing area lighting for driveways, walkways and yards. In addition, the wire extension enables the light itself to be mounted inside a barn or garage while the panel is mounted in the sun outdoors.

How long will my sign light stay lit every night?

Assuming appropriate solar panel placement and a fresh battery, the GenLight has been designed to remain lit up to 18 hours. However, multiple cloudy days, inappropriate solar panel mounting and an aging battery can all reduce the amount of time the light can last.

How long does the battery last? How difficult is it to replace?

Solar sign light batteries typically last two to three years under normal conditions. Replacement batteries can be purchased from a local hardware store or from our web site, and can be easily replaced by removing the back of the light fixture, unplugging the old battery and plugging in the new one.

What is the warranty on this product?

The manufacturer provides a one year warranty on the solar panel and a sixty day warranty on the light fixture.
