Sign lights powered by solar energy are relatively simple in their operation. Nevertheless, challenges abound in selecting between different designs and configurations to match your specific sign's requirements.

Of course, you need to make sure that the spotlight included in the system is bright enough for your signage. However, it is difficult to provide hard and fast rules because every installation is different in terms of ambient light at nighttime, sign color and contrast and the distance and angle of the installed light.  In general, all the single-sided sign lights we sell can light a up to 6' x 8' sign, but to varying degrees of brightness.  Some, like the GenLight and High Power Sign Light can illuminate up to an 8' x 10' sign. For very long signs, our double-sided sign light can be configured with the two spotlights illuminating each end of one side of a sign.

The configuration of the solar power components is also crucial for a successful deployment. All solar sign lighting systems consist of a solar panel, spotlight, battery and charge controller. Some systems, like the commercial solar sign light and the GenLight, embed the charge controller and battery within the light fixture. This design provides for a very simple installation since only two components need to be connected, and the connection is made with a simple plug and jack. However, the downside is that the charge controller has few options for configuration and the battery has a limited size.

On the other hand, the high-power solar sign light as well as the double-sided sign light separate the charge controller and battery from the light fixture, allowing for a larger battery and a more sophisticated charge controller that includes a timer and status indicator. In addition, standard weatherproof wires connect to the charge controller using screw terminals. These screw terminals make it easy to replace the wires with extensions for optimal placement of the components. However, they do require more time and attention to insure correct installation.

As always, contact us if you have any questions about how to determine the appropriate sign lighting system for your business, housing development or home.
